Happy Thanksgiving!

I came across this great quote by Henry David Thoreau from a letter he wrote to a friend back in 1854 and thought it was worth sharing:

“I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual…O how I laugh when I think of my vague indefinite riches. No run on my bank can drain it, for my wealth is not possession but enjoyment.”

There are only a few days a year when we are all encouraged to step back and reflect on our life and its many blessings. I find this time of year to be especially important for this very reason. Of course, it’s easy to get caught up in the commercialism and challenging logistics of the holidays, but I encourage you to avoid this temptation.

In life, what is most important is the quality and depth of the relationships we have with other people. Sometimes keeping certain relationships going isn’t an easy endeavor, but it is almost always worth it.  It is also equally important to put the needs of others on par with your own.   Real joy will always come from giving not getting.

I have much to be thankful for and I am certain you do as well.  It is always a matter of perspective.  I wish you and your loved ones a joyful and peaceful Thanksgiving. Ignore the stress, minimize indulgence, and embrace the true sentiment of the day.  I also hope that 2013 brings with it a sense of “perpetual thanksgiving.”
