Happy Holidays 2012!

Christmas for me has always been about acknowledging that there are things more important than ourselves and the individual journey we are taking. We can and should strive to be worthy of our shared humanity and fundamental capacity to do good. The world around us is simply a reflection of our willingness to consider this fact into our life equation and think/act accordingly.

Leadership Thought #416 – Have a Plan B

It is rare that things work out exactly as planned. We often attempt something with the best of intentions and then run smack into a reality not as accommodating as we’d like it to be. In all decision making or negotiation situations it’s advisable to have a plan B that allows you to adjust for shifting circumstances or differing points of view. We often don’t get everything we want, but to paraphrase the Rolling Stones if we are smart about it, “we just might find we get what we need.” It’s very important to be able to prioritize your objectives and know where you have some room for movement. In fact, it’s critical to build flexibility into your response strategy.

Leadership Thought #415 – Know When To Stand Your Ground

There is alot of talk about compromise in the media lately especially as it pertains to our federal government. There is this general sense that if political leaders would just be reasonable then there is an easy pathway to finding common ground. While I am certainly a fan of win-win negotiations, I don’t always believe that compromise is the best course of action. Sometimes you have to stand on principle and do what you believe is right instead of what may be politically expedient. Courage can be a lonely place at times, but going against your core values/beliefs usually has much worse consequences. Some things should be non-negotiable.
