For Leaders, Spring Is a Choice: Planting the Seeds for What Comes Next
For Leaders, Spring Is a Choice: Planting the Seeds for What Comes Next
I’ve always loved the changing of the seasons.
There’s something grounding about it. A quiet reminder that everything has its time… and everything has its purpose.
Right now, for those of us in the northern hemisphere, we’re stepping into spring. And for me, spring—along with fall—is one of the most meaningful seasons of the year.
Not because it’s easy. But because of what it represents.
The Energy of Renewal
Spring is about renewal.
We move from the gray, muted tones of winter into something far more alive—colour returns, light stretches longer into the day, and the world seems to wake up all at once. The birds are louder. The air feels different. Even people feel different.
I know I do.
There’s a little more bounce in my step these days. And if you want proof that energy is contagious, just watch a two-year-old Bernedoodle in the springtime. Mine has gone from mildly content to full-on chaos and joy in a matter of weeks.
It’s hard not to notice. And it makes you think…
Maybe we’re not meant to spend so much time inside—physically or mentally.
Because when I’ve been outside more these past few weeks, I’ve felt better. Clearer. More energized. More optimistic.
Sunshine is good for the soul.
The Question Worth Asking
So here’s the real question:
What season are you in—personally and professionally?
Not what the calendar says…But how you’re actually showing up.
Because even after a long, uncertain winter—economically, emotionally, operationally—you still get to choose your posture.
- Are you stepping into renewal?
- Are you looking for opportunity?
- Are you ready to grow again?
Winter can take a lot out of us. It forces patience. It demands resilience. And sometimes it leaves us a little worn down.
But spring? Spring invites us to begin again.
Spring Is for Planting
If you think about your business like a set of seasons, spring is when momentum starts.
It’s when you plant.
Not everything will grow. That’s part of the deal. But nothing grows unless something gets planted.
This is the time to:
- Re-engage your team with energy and clarity
- Revisit opportunities you may have put on hold
- Invest in relationships, strategy, and capability
- Take thoughtful risks that position you for growth
Spring doesn’t guarantee results. But it creates the conditions for them.
Summer Will Test What You’ve Planted
Because summer is coming. And summer is different.
That’s when the heat turns up—literally and figuratively.
Business gets busy. Demand increases. The pace accelerates. Your team is stretched. At the same time, people step away for vacations, creating gaps that need to be managed.
Summer is when execution matters most.
It’s when you find out if what you planted in spring has roots.
- Did you prepare your team?
- Did you align your priorities?
- Did you create enough capacity to handle the growth?
If spring is about intention, summer is about performance.
Fall Is Where It Pays Off
Then comes fall. Harvest season.
This is when the effort begins to show up in tangible ways—revenue, profit, progress, stability.
If you’ve done the work:
- You start to see returns on your investments
- You strengthen your financial position
- You build reserves and create breathing room
- You prepare for what’s next
Fall is deeply satisfying—not because it’s easy, but because it reflects disciplined effort over time.
Winter Will Come Again
And then, inevitably, winter returns. It always does.
But here’s the difference:
The quality of your winter is determined by what you did in the seasons before it.
- The seeds you planted in spring
- The discipline you showed in summer
- The results you harvested in fall
That’s what carries you through.
A Season Worth Embracing
So as we step into spring, I find myself feeling optimistic.
Not because everything is certain—far from it.
But because uncertainty has always been part of the cycle.
And even in uncertain environments, opportunity is everywhere for those willing to look for it… and act on it.
So here’s my hope for you:
- I hope you feel a sense of renewal.
- I hope you feel energy returning.
- I hope you’re willing to plant—even if you’re not sure what will grow.
Because this season?
It matters more than most people realize.
Questions to Consider
- Where in your business do you need renewal right now?
- What “seeds” have you been hesitant to plant?
- How are you preparing your team for the demands of summer?
- What would a meaningful “harvest” look like for you this year?
- What needs to change now to ensure you’re ready for the next winter?
Spring doesn’t last forever.
