It’s important never to get too full of yourself or expect good times and success to be never-ending. The laws of gravity apply in all aspects of life: what goes up must come down. No one lives at the peak for too long. I’ve always believed that it’s not just what happens when you are on top that matters, but also the grace with how you manage the inevitable changes and decline. Life is about cycles and reinvention. It is not a continuous upward sloping straight line.
It all starts at the top. Whether you are a politician, government official, leading hedge fund executive, Wall Street banker, corporate CEO, small business owner, college president, sports coach, professional athlete, teacher, parent, etc., your actions do matter! Strong Ethics aren’t a luxury but a requirement of any well run business, organization, community, classroom and family. Behaviors do ultimately have consequences. And, even though you may win in the short term by always putting your needs first, not playing by the rules or stretching the boundaries of what’s acceptable, ultimately it will catch up with you and sadly have adverse consequences for others in your life.
Most people I know want to create better outcomes in their life. They spend many hours dreaming, thinking, and talking about what a better situation could look like. They are usually confident in their own abilities and feel they measure up favorably against their peers. It’s not unusual to hear them surprised or even offer rationalizations when others they deem less talented or knowledgeable achieve more comparative success. The bottom line is that health, happiness and success are all the result of daily habits and behaviors that over time lead to a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Of course some people are blessed with extraordinary or unusual talent; however they are the exception not the rule.
All successful people that I know learn from their mistakes. In fact, it is often a big mistake or two that ends up being a pivotal point in their career. If you aren’t making mistakes then you aren’t taking enough risks or pushing yourself hard enough to get a true understanding of your potential.
The most successful people I know don’t create long lists of goals they want to accomplish. As the saying goes, “if everything is important, than nothing really is.” Instead, they focus on a handful of objectives that will clearly advance the end results they are trying achieve in their work and personal life.
Be a coach/mentor to your direct reports – seek out a coach/mentor; everyone needs a little guidance now and then and no one person has all the answers.
I do believe we all have a purpose and something to share in this world regardless of the time we may or may not have. In fact, the lives of those who are unfortunately cut short can be even more instructive.
