So much about life comes down to your attitude about it. I know privileged people who are regularly misanthropic and others with less economic advantages that are mostly happy even though their lot in life seems comparatively difficult. Every day when we wake up, we get to make a choice about how we approach our life. We can see our existence as an amazing gift full of unlimited possibilities or a burden full of work, obligations, and limitations. We can appreciate what we have or yearn for what is beyond our reach. We can make a positive difference in the lives of other people or focus exclusively on ourselves. We can build bridges to solidify positive relationships or forget to tend to the basic maintenance of effective human interaction.
If you approach every day as a gift, I guarantee you that you will be a happier and more successful person. I do my best to count my blessings every morning when I wake up and every night before bed and it makes an enormous difference. Everyone’s life has up and down periods. Even the most talented, disciplined, and thoughtful people can’t control everything that happens to them. However, after your initial emotional reaction you can control how you respond to the situation. You can also do your best to put whatever happens in proper context. The journey of life provides many opportunities for personal growth and development.
I have always liked watching sunrises and sunsets. Our days are typically bookended with beautiful natural events that to me symbolize what life is all about. Every morning is a new day full of possibility. There will be some days where the beauty and wonder of what is around you will be awe-inspiring and life affirming. The day will start on a high note and get better from there. Other days you won’t be so lucky. It might be a bit dark and gloomy, and you wake up in a sour mood. You may even have one of those difficult days where nothing seems to go right. However, this too shall pass, and the sun will set on that day and reappear the next morning in all its astounding glory.
Have you ever noticed that some of the shortest and darkest days in winter have some of the most amazing sunrises and sunsets? I’ve always believed there is a lesson in this. In life, it is not about the darkness but about the light. Every day is indeed a gift. What you do with it is up to you.
